3 The Urban sustainabilty project of the Jerusalem Institute of Israel studies emphasizes the behavioural sciences in examining the issue of sustainability, and focuses on the consumer and a decrease in consumption rather then the manufacturer. This, as part of the notion that sustainabilty could come only from changing behavioural consumption patterns, and that the city is an opportunity to promote these changes in the majority of the population by using its machanisms and infrastructures. פרוייקט קיימות עירונית של מכון ירושלים לחקר ישראל שם דגש על מדעי ההתנהגות בבחינת נושא הקיימות, ומתמקד בצרכן ובצמצום הצריכה ולא ביצרן. זאת, מתוך תפיסת עולם כי קיימות תבוא מתוך שינוי דפוסי התנהגות צרכניים, וכי העיר היא הזדמנות להכיל שינויים אלו על מרבית האוכלוסיה דרך מנגנונים מובנים. It wisely and fairly uses its infrastructures and resources, whether material, natural, human or social, while taking responsibility for its share in managing global ecological systems, and out of responsibility for its physical and cultural legacy עיר מקיימת מאפשרת חיים באושר וקיום בכבוד לכל, בתוכה ומחוצה לה. היא משתמשת בתבונה ובהוגנות בתשתיות ובמשאבים החומריים, הטבעיים, האנושיים והחברתיים שברשותה, תוך לקיחת אחריות על חלקה בניהול מערכות אקולוגיות גלובליות, ומתוך אחריות למורשתה הפיזית והתרבותית ולדורות הבאים.

4 This year, the Bezalel Academy s Design Masters program workshop will Explore the city of Akko (Acre), as part of a collaboration with the Urban Sustainability project by the The Jerusalem Institute for Israel studies. During the course of 3.5 days workshop, A group of 70 students from all three courses of the program (Design management, about design, design and technology) will be guided by leading figures from Israel and Abroad, will explore ways to map, examine and communicate the city from a sustainable perspective in different fields, and mark design opportunities that may improve its sustainability. The Urban sustainability project by the The Jerusalem Institute for Israel studies marks the city as the bed of most human activity and with a team of leading human behaviour experts asks to outline policy and guidelines to achieve sustainability by changing the urban life style. This project is the continuation of the extensive Sustainability outlook 2030 project, by the institute and the ministry of the environment, which recommended strategic thought patterns leading to sustainability. The masters workshop aims to explore how can a designer s perspective define and act on issues that rise from the question of urban sustainability. This, while fully fulfilling the potential of an intensive workshop and its advantages in giving quick and strong answers to these questions. במסגרת שיתוף פעולה עם פרוייקט קיימות עירונית של מכון ירושלים לחקר ישראל, כ- 70 סטודנטים של התכנית לתואר שני בעיצוב בבצלאל על שלושת מסלוליה ייצאו בחודש יוני 2015 לסדנא בת 3.5 ימים למפות את העיר עכו תחת הנחיה של מרצים אורחים מובילים מהארץ ומחו ל. פרויקט "קיימות עירונית" מבית מכון ירושלים לחקר ישראל מזהה את העיר כמקום בו מתרחשת רוב הפעילות האנושית, ובעזרת צוות של מומחים מובילים במגוון תחומי ההתנהגות האנושית, מבקש להתוות המלצות מדיניות והתנהלות, להשגת קיימות באמצעות שינוי בסגנון החיים העירוני. הפרוייקט הינו המשכו של הפרויקט רחב ההיקף "תחזית קיימות 2030", של מכון ירושלים לחקר ישראל והמשרד להגנת הסביבה, שסיפק המלצות לכווני חשיבה אסטרטגית שיאפשרו להגיע לקיימות. מטרת הסדנא היא לבחון כיצד יכולה הפרספקטיבה של המעצב להציף ולפעול על הסוגיות העולות משאלת הקיימות העירונית. זאת, תוך ניצול אופטימלי של הפורמט הייחודי של סדנא אינטנסיבית של מספר ימים והיתרונות היחסיים שזו יכולה להביא בייצור תגובות מהירות לשאלות.

5 Before the workshop, a series of lectures will expose the students to information about the city, about sustainability and about research and mapping. The mentors will also assign perliminary tasks for the students. The workshop will be constructed around 6 groups, with each group dealing with a different sustainability issue, as defined together with the Jerusalem Institute: Transportation / Health / Public spaces / Smart city / Local economy / Local community Each of the groups will be lead by a mentor with a speciality in mapping and/or visual representation. The mentor will become the head of a temporary office, and the students as the office employees. The groups will work in Akko as new residents, and map the city and their experiences throughout the workshop, on eye level and from a design perspective. The mentors will manage their group during office hours to acquire and process new information, while giving them assignments for off-work hours. The way the info will be process will emphasize the potential of the design scale in contributing to issues of urban sustainability, each group with its own issue. The workshop aims to explore mapping technique on a specific city in a design perspective cross section, as a technique to mark opportunities for an intensive, behaviour changing design actions in the cityscape. These techniques will be formed into a publication to be used by the designers, the Jerusalem institute and the municipality as a call for action in Akko, as well as an experimental tool for alternative mapping of cities at large, from a point of view that offers interventions of low bureaucratic infrastructure. טרם הסדנא, יחשפו הסטודנטים לתכנים אשר יכולים לסייע להם בבואם לעיר ויסופק להם מידע מקדים על עכו, קיימות עירונית, ונושא הסדנא הנבחר. זאת דרך הפעלה מקדימה של מנחי הסדנא, כמו גם הרצאות מטעם מכון ירושלים ועיריית עכו טרם הסדנא. במסגרת הסדנא, יחולקו הסטודנטים ל- 6 קבוצות, כאשר לכל קבוצה תינתן סוגיה אחרת של קיימות עירונית, כפי שהוגדר במשותף עם מכון ירושלים: תחבורה, בריאות, מרחבים ציבוריים, עיר חכמה, קהילתיות וכלכלה מקומית. לכל אחת מקבוצות אלו יצוות מנחה המתמחה בסוג מסוים של מיפוי ועיבוד ויזואלי של נתונים. המנחה יתפקד כמנהל משרד זמני, בו הסטודנטים יתפקדו כעובדים למשך הסדנא. הקבוצות השונות יפעלו בעכו כתושבים חדשים, וימפו את העיר ואת חוויותיהם במשך ימי הסדנא, מגובה העיניים ובפרספקטיבה המאתרת בעיות עיצוביות. המנחים, במהלך שעות העבודה היומיות, יפעילו את הסטודנטים להרחבת המידע שהם משיגים כמו גם יתנו משימות לשעות הפנאי, ולאחר מכן יפעלו לעיבודו בדרך ייחודית השמה דגש על האופן בו קנה המידה העיצובי יכול לתרום לסוגיות של קיימות עירונית, כל קבוצה בתחום המומחיות שלה. מטרת הסדנא תהיה לבחון טכניקות של מיפוי על עיר ספציפית בחתך רוחב וממבט המעצב, כטכניקה לאיתור הזדמנויות לפעולה עיצובית אינטנסיבית ומשנת דפוסי התנהגות במרחב העירוני. אלו יאוגדו לחוברת, אשר תוכל לשמש הן את המעצבים והן את מכון ירושלים כקריאה לפעולה במרחב הציבורי )של עכו במקרה זה(, וככלי למיפוי וניתוח אלטרנטיבי של ערים אחרות ממבט קיימות עירונית בקנה מידה אשר מאפשר התערבויות בעלות חתימה בירוקרטית נמוכה.

9 THEMATIC GROUP 1 - TRANSPORTATION קבוצת נושא - 1 תחבורה Sustainable transportation is aimed at decreasing consumption, increasing accessibilty to all users, increasing comfort and more. One of the key targets of sustainble transportation is encouraging alternatives to the use of private vehicles. A reduce in private vehicles means lowering the ecological and environmental impact while improving the quality of life for the city dwellers: less traffic, less pollution, better mobility for all populations, money savings, and re-appropriation of parking spaces. Existing alternatives for private vehicles are versatile and include public transportation, walking, cycling and more. recent strategies offer alternative thinking on the use of private vehicles in new forms which align with perceptions of urban sustainabilty and a consumption decrease. these include: Service economy This term refers to the notion of paying for services rather than products. In the case of vehicles, it relates to ideas such as car rentals by hour/ day (for instance, Car2go). Here, the idea of renting rather then owning, decreases the number of needed vehicles on a city scale. City bike rental services also permit an alternative method of transportation for those who do not own a bicycle, such as sporadic users. Sharing Community based notions of sharing of private vehicles are already in place. These include carpooling for people who share a destination, as well as other, more structured services such as 'GetAround', where people rent their cars when not in use and 'Uber', a taxi service operated by private owners. Naturally, city services and planning can encourage and accomodate such notions of sustainabilty - from physical infrastructure, such as bike lanes and public transportation lanes, through community meeting points and up to campaigning and educating to name a few, the city and the services it provides can push towards a sustainable transportation. תחבורה מקיימת מכוונת לצמצום צריכה, הגדלת הנגישות לכלל המשתמשים, הגברת הנוחות ועוד. בתוך כך, אחת הסוגיות המרכזיות של תחבורה מקיימת היא הפחתת השימוש ברכב פרטי לטובת חלופות. הפחתה כזו נועדת, מחד, להפחית את העומס שאנו מייצרים על הסביבה, ומאידך- לשפר את איכות החיים של תושבי העיר: הפחתת עומסים בכבישים, הפחתת זיהום האויר, הגברת הניידות של כלל האוכלוסיות, חיסכון בכסף, חיסכון במקומות חניה לטובת שימושים אחרים. החלופות הקיימות לשימוש ברכב פרטי כוללות אמצעי תחבורה שונים, כגון תחבורה ציבורית, הליכתיות, אופניים ועוד. כיום התפתחו גם צורות שונות של שימוש ברכב אשר כולן עולות בקנה אחד עם החתירה לקיימות עירונית ולצמצום צריכה: שירותיות תפיסה על פיה צורך האדם את השירות שהוא צריך, במקום את המוצר. בנושא רכב, מדובר על שכירת רכב לפי הצורך, )דוגמת.)Car2go בשיטה זו ניתן להפחית את מספר הרכבים בעיר, משום שלא כל תושב נדרש להחזיק ברכב צמוד. בנוסף, שירות השכרת אופניים כתל-אופן, מאפשר גם לאנשים שאין ברשותם אופניים לבחור בדרך זו לתנועה ממקום למקום. שיתוף תפיסות המבוססות על שיתוף קהילתי כבר משרישות עצמן. אלה עשויות לכלול דוגמאות כמו,Carpooling לאנשים החולקים יעד נסיעה, או שירותים מובנים יותר דוגמת,GetAround בה אנשים מציעים את רכביהם להשכרה בעת שאינם בשימוש, או שרות מוניות המופעל על-ידי רכבים פרטיים, כ- Uber. באופן טבעי, שירותים עירוניים ותכנון יכולים לעודד ולאפשר תפיסות אלו של קיימות - מתשתיות פיזיות דוגמת נתיבי אופניים ונתיבי תחבורה ציבורית, דרך נקודות מפגש קהילתיות לנסיעה משותפת ועד קמפיינים וחינוך, העיר והשירותים שהיא מספקת יכולים לדחוף אל עבר תחבורה מקיימת.

10 THEMATIC GROUP 1 - TRANSPORTATION קבוצת נושא - 1 תחבורה GROUP LEADERS ראשי הקבוצה Rooly Eliezerov רולי אליעזרוב Graduate of the Pratt Institute architecture school. Teaches at the Bezalel academy school of Architecture. Eilezerov is also acting president and co-founder at start up company Gygia. The company supplies social technologies to hunderds of the world's leading companies such as NBC, Nike, Verizon, Forbes, Dell. Adi Yehezkeli עדי יחזקאלי Adi Yehezkeli is an architect, Graduated from Bezalel Academy of Art and Design. Recently came back to Tel Aviv from Tokyo, where she worked at Kazuyo Sejima + Ryue Nishizawa / SANAA. עדי יחזקאלי היא אדריכלית, בוגרת אקדמיה לאמנות ועיצוב בצלאל. לאחרונה חזרה לתל אביב מטוקיו, שם עבדה אצל קזויו סג ימה + ריו נישיזאווה /.SANAA

11 THEMATIC GROUP 2 - PUBLIC SPACE קבוצת נושא - 2 מרחב ציבורי A city is comprised of its space and its built assets. A sustainable city uses these spaces and buidings in an efficient way, striving for using all of the space on, under and above the ground for its citizens every day for the whole day, with no buildings and facilities left unused. A derelicht urban area must be renewed; An area or building which uses space and us only being used for a small number of hours a day requires a reexamination of its efficiency; Uses which generate negative environmental effects must be reduced. The need for preserving valuable built assets while updating their uses must also be taken into account. The urban space is a very meaningful resource of the city life and a sustainable city must encourage the citizens' use of it. It must make this space accessible to all of its inhabitants, while allowing layered uses - different uses of the same space in different hours of the day, for different purposes. An Inviting public space can compensate for less living space - in big cities there is a tendancy for reducing apartment sizes due to a lack in territory and high costs. A well planned public space can be used for a meeting, work, excersize, community and other activities which create multi cultural ties. עיר מורכבת מן המרחב ומן המבנים והמתקנים שנבנו בתחומה assets(.)built עיר מקיימת מנצלת את המרחב ואת המבנים והמתקנים בצורה יעילה וחותרת לכך שכל מרחב על הקרקע, מעליה ומתחתיה מנוצל לטובת פעילות תושביה כל יום, במשך כל שעות היום ואין במרחב מבנים או מתקנים שאינם מנוצלים יום-יום שעה-שעה. איזור עירוני שהתדרדר חייב בהתחדשות; שטח או מבנה התופס מרחב ומנוצל למספר שעות מצומצם ביממה דורש בחינה מחודשת לגבי יעילותו. שימושים הגורמים להשפעות סביבתיות שליליות חייבים להצטמצם, יש לקחת בחשבון גם את הצורך בשימור נכסים בנויים בעלי ערך והתאמתם לשימושים עדכניים. המרחב הציבורי הוא משאב משמעותי ביותר בחיי העיר ועל עיר מקיימת לעודד את שימוש התושבים בו. עליה להנגיש את המרחב לכלל האוכלוסיות שחיות בעיר, וכן לאפשר ריבוד שימושים- שימושים שונים באותו מרחב בשעות שונות של היום, למטרות שונות. מרחב ציבורי מזמין יכול לפצות על הקטנת שטח הדיור )בערים הגדולות ניכרת נטיה לצמצום גדלי הדירות בגלל מחסור בשטח ועלויות גבוהות(. מרחב ציבורי המתוכנן נכון יכול להוות מקום למפגש, לעבודה, לפנאי, לכושר, לקהילה ולפעילויות המייצרות חיבורים בין-תרבותיים.

12 THEMATIC GROUP 2 - PUBLIC SPACE קבוצת נושא - 2 מרחב ציבורי GROUP LEADER ראש הקבוצה Cathelijne Montens קטליין מונטנס Public space constitutes both the receptacle of common experience and a realm for encountering difference. Its spaces are both banal and delightful; both everyday and filled with contingency. Such spaces form the primary field of action for Krijn Christiaansen and Cathelijne Montens (KCCM), two Dutch designers whose practice explores the ways public spaces and landscapes are made by, used by, lived in, transformed and shaped by people. Their attention is directed not only to the physical forms of the built environment, but also encompasses the stories, myths, habits and gestures that suffuse it. Christiaansen and Montens research and design interventions have taken them beyond their native Netherlands to Serbia, Romania, Indonesia, Japan and Morocco. החלל הציבורי מהווה גם את כלי הקיבול של חוויה משותפת וגם את המרחב בוא אנו פוגשים את השונה. חלליו הם גם בנאליים וגם מענגים; גם יומיומיים וגם מלאי אי ודאות. חללים אלו הם שדה הפעולה העיקרי של קריין קריסטיאנסן וקטליין מונטנס,)KCCM( שני מעצבים הולנדים שהפרקטיקה שלהם חוקרת את הדרכים בהם מרחבים ציבוריים נוצרים, משומשים, משתנים ומתעצבים על ידי אנשים. תשומת הלב שלהם מכוונת לא רק על הצורות הפיזיות של הסביבה הבנויה, אלא מקיפה גם את הסיפורים, המיתוסים, ההרגלים והמחוות של שמפעפעות בה. המחקר וההתערבויות של קריסטיאנסן ומונטנס הובילו אותם אל מעבר למולדתם בהולנד, אל סרביה, רומניה, אינדונזיה, יפן ומרוקו.

13 קבוצת נושא - 3 כלכלה מקומית THEMATIC GROUP 3 - LOCAL ECONOMY A city's strength lies in its ability to be a meeting place which creates innovation and allowes for cross-discipline connectivity. In the city initiatives of local economy are formed, which advance the abilities of its inhabitants, create local jobs and enrich the local area. In the core of the motivation for a local economy stands the need to strengthen the city's capabilities, the communities which operate in it, and its use of its resources - economic, natural human and social. Nowadays small and unique businesses are under a lot of economic strain and face closing, due to the arrival of large networks into the cities and thier outskirts. these networks compete with the small businesses which cannot struggle with the prices and selection that such a logistic operation could offer. This refers both to small commercial businesses as well as micro-businesses (such as the plumber, the graphic designer, etc.). the strength and importance of small businesses is in the ir connection to the community. When the local buy in local shops, they guarantee both the reinforcement of these businesses as well as the connections of the community. Additionally, it assures new workplaces within the city, which decrease the use of vehicls, increase diversity and strengthen the public space. חוזקה של העיר ביכולתה להוות מקום מפגש היוצר חדשנות ומאפשר חיבוריות חוצת תחומי-מקצוע. בעיר מתפתחות יוזמות של כלכלה מקומית המקדמות את היכולות של תושביה, יוצרות מקומות תעסוקה קרובים למקום המגורים ומעשירות את המרחב המקומי. בבסיס החתירה לכלכלה מקומית עומד הרצון לחזק את יכולות העיר, את הקהילות הפועלות בה, ואת השימוש שלה במשאביה- הכלכליים, הטבעיים, האנושיים, והחברתיים. כיום נמצאים עסקים קטנים וייחודיים בקשיים כלכליים רבים ובסכנת סגירה, עקב כניסתן של רשתות גדולות לערים או לשוליהן. הרשתות מתחרות בעסקים הקטנים אשר אין ביכולתם להיאבק במחירים ובמבחר שיכולות רשתות כאלו להציע. מדובר הן על עסקים מסחריים קטנים והן על עוסקים זעירים הפועלים בעיר כגון אינסטלטור, גרפיקאי ועוד. כוחם וחשיבותם של העסקים הקטנים הוא בחיבורם לקהילה. כאשר תושבים קונים בעסקים מקומיים, הם מבטיחים הן את חיזוקם של אותם עסקים והן את חיזוק הקשרים הקיימים בקהילה. בנוסף, חיזוק העסקים המקומיים מבטיח ייצור מקומות עבודה בתוך העיר, המפחיתים את הצורך בשימוש ברכב לשם הגעה לעבודה, מגדילים את המגוון הקיים ומעשירים את המרחב הציבורי בעיר.

14 קבוצת נושא - 3 כלכלה מקומית THEMATIC GROUP 3 - LOCAL ECONOMY GROUP LEADER ראש הקבוצה Micha Livne מיכה ליבנה Micha Livne is a documentary maker, director, photographer and producer working both independantly and for national networks. He is a graduate of the "Beit Zvi" film and theater school, and is married with 3 daughters. Among his works: "Socrates on Lambrate", "Spiderweb", "Ha'Ne'eman", "Citizen Peres" and more. He had a recent debut of his new film "Sipur Sagur" - which explored memories of the Sultan Yaacov battle of the first Lebanon war. מיכה ליבנה הוא יוצר דוקומנטרי, במאי, צלם ועורך שעובד גם בהפקות עצמאיות וגם עבור גופי טלוויזיה ארציים. הוא בוגר בית הספר לאמנויות הבמה והקולנוע בית צבי, והוא נשוי ואב לשלוש בנות. בין עבודותיו: סוקרטס על למברטה, קורי עכביש, הנאמן, האזרח פרס ועוד. לאחרונה יצא סרטו החדש סיפור סגור להקרנת בכורה במסגרת פסטיבל דוקאביב, שהיה מסע בעקבות זכרונות אבודים בקרב סולטן יעקב במלחמת לבנון הראשונה.

15 THEMATIC GROUP 4 - HEALTH קבוצת נושא - 4 בריאות The awarness for the importance of physical activity has dramaticlly increased in recent years, and the way the urban spacec is planned holds a great effect on one's choices in that respect - the space the city gives to walking and bicycle trails has a great effect on the use people will make of these means of transportation. This is also true to buildings - the way elevators and staris are designed holds impact on the choices one would due when wanting to climb up/ Local and responsible nutrition: Food is a central element in the average consumer, since having food is a negotiation between what i will and will not put in his body. during the last two decades criticism was focused on consumption's immorality. In general, such consumption includes environmental issues, but it is expanding towards animals, human and labor rights. In general, the "moral" consumer feels responsible towards society and expresses it by changing his consumption habits. He is the author of Ganges Water Machine: Designing New India s Ancient River (2015), a decade long research project to construct a dynamic atlas of the world s most populous river basin. His work on the Ganges has been made possible through a J. William Fulbright Fellowship as well as fellowships and grants from the Ford Foundation and Harvard University. Acciavatti lives in New York and is a founding partner of Somatic Collaborative and editor of Manifest: A Journal of American Architecture and Urbanism. The city is a cross cultural interaction and meeting place. A strong since of community is for the individual a safe place which encourages new connections while increasing happiness in non-material tools. A since of community also increases sharing and togetherness. Strengthening communality in the city means strengthening cross cultural connections and deepening the aquintance between different citizens and commmunities in a way that can strenghten the city. העיר מאפשרת ומקדמת התארגנות קבוצתית וקהילתית ומקדמת הכלה ומעורבות תושבים במגוון רחב של פעילויות. העיר מהווה מקום מפגש ואינטראקציה בין תרבותית. תחושת קהילתיות חזקה מהווה עבור הפרט מרחב בטוח המאפשר היכרות ועוזר בהגברת תחושת האושר בכלים לא חומריים. תחושת קהילתיות אף מגבירה את ההדדיות ואת הרצון והיכולת לשתף. חיזוק הקהילתיות בעיר פירושו חיזוק חיבורים בין-תרבותיים והעמקת ההיכרות בין התושבים והקהילות השונות, בצורה שתוביל להגברת חוסנה של העיר.

18 THEMATIC GROUP 5 - COMMUNITIES קבוצת נושא - 5 קהילות GROUP LEADER ראש הקבוצה Roni Levit רוני לויט Roni Levit is a Visual Communications Artist, born in Jerusalem. After graduating with honors from Bezalel Academy of Art & Design in 2005, she established Studio Roni Levit in 2006 Tel Aviv. The studio specializes in information design, examining the limits of objective and subjective facts while also attempting to measure concepts that lie beyond quantification. The studio produces pioneering infographic work for Israel s major newspapers, numerous NGO's, selected private companies, and cultural publications. Since 2008 Roni Levit is a lecturer at the Bezalel Academy of Art, implementing and teaching Information Design courses. רוני לויט היא מעצבת תקשורת חזותית ואמנית ילידת ירושלים. לאחר סיום לימודיה בהצטיינות מאקדמיית בצלאל ב- 2005, היא ייסדה את סטודיו רוני לויט ב בתל אביב. הסטודיו מתמחה בעיצוב אינפורמציה, ובוחן את הגבולות של העובדות האובייקטיביות והסובייקטיביות תוך ניסיון למדוד קונספטים שלא ניתן לכמת. הסטודיו מייצר עבודות אינפוגרפיקה חלוציות לעיתונים המרכזיים בישראל, מספר רב של מלכ רים, חברות פרטיות נבחרות ופרסומים תרבותיים. מאז 2008, רוני לויט מרצה בבצלאל, שם היא מטמיעה ומלמדת קורסים לעיצוב אינפורמציה.

19 THEMATIC GROUP 6 - SMART CITY קבוצת נושא - 6 עיר חכמה The use of digital media tool for improving the lives of the city's inhabitants - starting from urban infrastructure, through making information and knowledge more accessible, and up to strengthening the ties and connections between people of different kinds, between different sectors of the city (business, civil, etc.) and in between all of the activities that comprise the day to day city life (infrastructure, work, leisure, consumption, etc.). Nowadays many cities in the world strive for networking differnet services with digital systems to make them more efficient - waste mamagement, transprortation and traffic, municipal information and more. A smart city holds the potential for narrowing the gaps between different populations and making city services accessible for a larger group of inhabitants. For example - streetlights which adapt in rythm to users and allow long passage time for the elderly and the disabled; online city services which prevent the need for a visit to city hall; more accesible information for citizens and municipality alike - for example, digital billboards for public transportation stops, a message to municipaltiy on overflowing trash cans and more. Digital media allows for stronger ties between municipality and citizen which in turn, make citizens more involved in city life. שימוש בכלי מדיה דיגיטליים לשיפור חיי תושבי העיר- החל מתשתיות עירוניות, דרך הנגשת מידע ושירותים לתושבים, ועד לחיזוק הקשרים והחיבורים בין אנשים מסוגים שונים, בין מגזרים שונים שפועלים בעיר )עסקי, אזרחי ועוד( ובין כלל הפעילויות שמרכיבות את חיי היומיום של התושב )תשתיות, עבודה, פנאי, צריכה ועוד(. כיום חותרות ערים רבות בעולם לרישות שירותים שונים במערכות ממוחשבות בכדי להביא להתייעלותן- פינוי פסולת, מערכות תחבורה ורמזורים, הנגשת מידע לגבי שירותי העירייה השונים ועוד. עיר חכמה מכילה בתוכה את הפוטנציאל להקטנת הפערים בין אוכלוסיות שונות ולהנגשת שירותי העיר למספר רב יותר של תושבים. לדוגמא- רמזורים אשר מתאימים את קצבם למשתמשים בהם ומאפשרים זמן מעבר ארוך יותר לקשישים ולבעלי מוגבלויות; שירותים עירוניים רבים אשר מבוצעים כיום בצורה ממוחשבת וכך חוסכים מהתושב את הצורך להגיע פיזית לעירייה. שיפור השירותים אף בא לידי ביטוי בכך שהמידע נגיש יותר, הן לתושבים והן לעירייה- לדוגמא- לוחות דיגיטליים המבשרים על זמני הגעת תחבורה ציבורית, או הודעה לעירייה על פחים גדושים. כלי המדיה הדיגיטליים אף מאפשרים את חיזוק הקשר בין הרשות לתושבים ובכך מאפשרים מעורבות גדולה יותר של התושב במתרחש בעירו.
